This activity was part of efforts to improve the technical skills and preparedness of guides in facing extreme terrain, especially on the vertical route at Carstensz Peak, Papua.

During the training session, participants practiced rappelling techniques using the Figure of 8-a figure-eight-shaped descent device designed to control descent speed through a rope friction system. The training was conducted technically, with ropes, harnesses, and carabiners installed according to standard safety procedures.

“This training is not only about mastering the equipment, but also about building discipline and sensitivity to safety. All guides must be familiar with vertical terrain scenarios,” said Timo Tipagau, a senior guide who also participated in the training.

The simulation was conducted in an industrial-scale training room equipped with safety markings and sloped surfaces as simulated cliff paths. Each participant wore a helmet, harness, and full equipment to replicate actual field conditions.

This training is part of a series of internal safety certification programs by Carstensz Expedition, which will also involve testing other equipment such as ascenders, ATCs, and Grigris. All activities prioritize the principle of zero accidents and aim to instill a safety culture among climbers.

GUIDE CARSTENSZ EXPEDITION HOLDS FIGURE OF 8 DESCENDER SIMULATION IN CLOSED TRAINING ROOM Timika, Central Papua — Climbing guides from Carstensz Expedition conducted a simulation of using Figure of 8 descender safety equipment in a vertical training room on Wednesday (11/6).
