On <strong>August 14, 2013<\/strong>, just before the 68th Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia, the <strong>Red and White flag was raised at the summit of Carstensz Pyramid (4,884 meters above sea level<\/strong>) \u2014 the highest peak in Indonesia and one of the Seven Summits of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What made this event even more extraordinary was that <strong>the flag-raising ceremony was led directly by the then Papua Police Chief, Inspector General Tito Karnavian,<\/strong> accompanied by police personnel, local communities, and climbers who hiked the extreme trail from Tembagapura on foot for over six hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\uddee\ud83c\udde9 Nationalism at the Highest Peak<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This commemoration was more than just a ceremony. It was a profound expression of patriotism, carried out in harsh terrain and extreme temperatures, proving that the spirit of independence can blaze from the highest point of this nation. The national anthem \u201cIndonesia Raya\u201d echoed across the icy expanse, making the eternal snow a silent witness to nationalism that transcends geographical and physical boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/papuamountaineering.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-05-12-at-08.48.25_cebf4311-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2819\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u267b\ufe0f Love for Nature, Love for the Homeland<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The event began with a <strong>cleanup of the climbing area<\/strong> \u2014 a conscious environmental initiative. Mimika Police Chief at the time, <strong>Police Commissioner Rontini<\/strong>, emphasized that the Carstensz Pyramid area \u2014 located within <strong>the Lorentz National Park<\/strong>, a UNESCO World Heritage Site \u2014 must be protected from the growing threat of litter left by climbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This moment affirmed that nationalism and environmental conservation can go hand in hand \u2014 loving the homeland not just in symbols, but through concrete action to protect its nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udf04 Papua: A Place of Hope and Unity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>More than a mere Independence Day celebration, the raising of the Red and White flag on Carstensz was a<strong> symbol of hope from eastern Indonesia for the entire archipelago<\/strong>.
