The sight of airplanes flying over ice mountains may be commonplace in European countries. But not many people know that a similar experience can be enjoyed in Indonesia, especially when flying from Timika to Sugapa, in Central Papua.
From the airplane window, passengers can enjoy the beautiful view of the Papua mountains, with their peaks covered in snow that never melts. In the distance, you can see the majestic Puncak Jaya and Carstensz Pyramid, the two highest mountains in Indonesia, which are often the destination for climbers from all over the world.
The sound of the airplane's rapidly spinning propellers may be loud, and the cramped cabin can make the trip uncomfortable. However, all of that is compensated for by the extraordinary outside view.
The vast white ice sheets blend with thin clouds, creating an atmosphere as if flying over a fairy tale. Many passengers are busy capturing this beautiful moment, as such scenery can only be seen in Papua and nowhere else in Indonesia. Even moments before landing in Sugapa, the sense of awe persists.
In fact, this view of the ice mountains marks the beginning of an extremely exotic journey to Carstensz. A brief experience, but one that will always be remembered: proof that Papua holds wonders that cannot be found in other tropical countries.
