Sugapa: The Exotic Gateway to Carstensz
Sugapa – Papua is vast and rich in destinations, from Jayapura and Merauke to Nabire. But there is one name that is rarely heard yet very important in the world of mountaineering: Sugapa, a village in Intan Jaya Regency. For climbers, Sugapa is the gateway to Carstensz Peak, one of the world’s “Seven Summits.”
The journey to Sugapa can only be reached by using a pioneer aircraft. The most common route is from Nabire or Timika. From Timika, the flight to Sugapa is a fascinating experience as passengers can see the scenery of snow-capped mountains, including Puncak Jaya and Carstensz Pyramid.

airplane window, something very rare and extraordinary. Although the plane is small and can only accommodate a dozen people with a fairly loud engine, the fatigue and cramped conditions are immediately replaced by the mesmerizing view outside the window.
Although it is called a village, Sugapa is quite modern with houses that have brick walls and zinc roofs. There are not many traditional honai houses left.
But there is one thing that definitely feels different, namely the price of daily necessities, which is much more expensive. For example, a bottle of mineral water that usually costs Rp5,000 in the city can cost up to Rp25,000 in Sugapa.

This is because all goods are transported by air, resulting in very high shipping costs. Despite the high prices, the friendly locals and the natural beauty of the surroundings make all expenses feel reasonable.
That’s what makes it interesting: hiking to Carstensz isn’t just about reaching the summit, but also about enjoying the natural beauty and authentic culture of Papua.
